    Description

The TRFS assesses the ability to learn and recall safety-related information similar to that found in the training programmes of safety-critical roles.

The candidate is required to learn and memorise information which is presented as passages of text, mostly based around transport scenarios, before answering 30 multiple-choice questions from memory.

The TRFS can be used in the transport and safety sectors but is also applicable to any role in which training involves learning rules and procedures, and in particular, where candidates are required to pass a training exam before taking up a position.

    Successfully using the TRFS

Brisbane Transport, the organisation responsible for public bus service in Brisbane, Australia, have been successfully using the TRFS to identify bus driver applicants with an aptitude for learning and following safety rules and regulations. This is a key skill required for the bus driver role as new recruits must go through extensive safety training. Since 2006 they have used the TRFS with over 4000 bus driver applicants.

Here is an example of the type of scenario you might find in the TRFS:

    Example Scenario: Travel Station Tickets

Read and memorise the passage below for 3 minutes without looking at the questions underneath. Then cover up the passage and see if you can answer the questions correctly from memory.

Advanced tickets can be purchased no less than three weeks prior to the date of travel at any station for buses, trains and airlines. Children under the age of 2 travel for free. Refunds can only be given no less than two weeks prior to the date of travel on advanced tickets for buses and trains. Airline advanced tickets can only be refunded one week after purchase.

Lost tickets for bus and train journeys on the day of travel cannot be re-issued; full price tickets must be bought. Lost airline tickets can only be re-issued with photographic identity and proof of purchase, either a receipt or card paid with as evidence.
